MADISON, WI – Today, the Assembly Committee on Corrections held its first meeting of the 2025-2026 legislative session with invited speakers from the Department of Corrections. Ranking Democratic Member Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:
“Today the Assembly Committee on Corrections held its first informational meeting of the session, where Secretary Jared Hoy and Department of Corrections leadership had the opportunity to deliver an informational presentation on the Wisconsin correctional system, the responsibilities of different divisions within the Department, and Governor Evers’ historic investment in Corrections through his 2025-2027 Executive Budget.
In addition to closing Green Bay Correctional Institution, converting Lincoln Hills School into an adult facility, and transforming Waupun Correctional Institution into a vocational village, this budget would also expand alternatives to revocation, expand the Earned Release Program, create and operate an Office of the Ombudsperson, create and operate a Central Intelligence Gathering Unit, and create and operate a medication administration pilot program for Columbia and Waupun Correctional Institutions.
I would like to thank Chair Representative Dean Kaufert and Secretary Hoy for holding this informational session. As the Ranking Democratic Member of the Committee on Corrections, I will continue to support the Governor’s Budget and the much-needed allocations that Governor Evers has made to improve aging and unsafe facilities, improve health services in our prisons, promote transparency and accountability, and ensure greater wellbeing for Persons In Our Care and correctional staff.”
