We did it Wisconsin!

The State Senate passed postpartum Medicaid extension! We are one step closer to making sure Wisconsin moms get the care and support they need.

Hi, I’m Senator Jesse James and today, I want to talk about something that could make a real difference for families right here in Wisconsin.

Right now, moms on Medicaid lose their coverage just 60 days after giving birth. 60 days! That’s unacceptable. Postpartum recovery doesn’t follow a deadline. Some of the most serious health risks like postpartum depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, and heart complications arise well into the first year — all while trying to care for a newborn.

Bringing a child into the world is life-changing — physically, emotionally, and mentally. That’s why this bill matters. Senate Bill 23 gives moms what they need: time. By extending postpartum Medicaid coverage to 12 months, we’re not expanding the program — we’re ensuring that moms who already qualify don’t lose support when they need it most.

Wisconsin is one of just two states that hasn’t made this change. With the Senate’s vote, we’ve taken a powerful step forward — but we’re not done yet.

Now it’s the Assembly’s turn to bring it to a vote. Let’s pass this bill, get it to the Governor’s desk, and give moms across Wisconsin the support they deserve. Because when it comes to protecting moms and families, there’s no room for politics.

Let’s make postpartum care a priority in Wisconsin. It’s time.
