MADISON, Wis. — This weekend, a new “Mr. Irrelevant” will be crowned in Green Bay at the end of the NFL Draft. The nickname is reserved for the player selected last in the draft, setting him apart from all the NFL hopefuls that came before.
But before the draft gets underway and a new “Mr. Irrelevant” is named, we’re putting our own spin on this time-honored tradition by selecting Wisconsin’s very own “Mr. Irresponsible.”
There’s no shortage of irresponsible embarrassments rounding out the Wisconsin GOP roster. From Derrick Van Orden’s world-renowned temper tantrums to Robin Vos’ refusal to expand Medicaid and Glenn Grothman’s whole thing, it’s difficult to separate the pack. But in the end, there was only one choice for Mr. Irresponsible: Wisconsin’s worst senator and leading conspiracy theorist, Ron Johnson.

- Just this week, Ron Johnson joined a far-right podcast to promote conspiracy theories about the September 11th terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, claiming there was “an awful lot being covered up” about the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
- Ron Johnson has become an extreme anti-vaxxer, spreading dangerous—and false—conspiracies that suggested vaccines are linked to autism.
- Ron Johnson is well known for undermining public health by suggesting the COVID-19 pandemic was “pre-planned,” questioning the safety of COVID-19 vaccines, and encouraging people to take horse dewormer to treat COVID.
- Ron Johnson called climate change “bullshit,” suggested that climate change could actually be “beneficial,” and claimed that renewable energy “windmills are killing the whales.”
- Ron Johnson claimed the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol was “not an armed insurrection” because the insurrectionists weren’t carrying firearms (they were). Johnson later insisted the insurrection that left five people dead was a “peaceful protest” (it wasn’t).
- Ron Johnson played a direct role in Donald Trump’s fake elector plot to overturn the 2020 election when he attempted to hand-deliver the forged elector certificates to Mike Pence on the morning of January 6th.
- Ron Johnson eagerly echoed Donald Trump’s disproven claims of widespread election fraud in the wake of the 2020 election.
- Ron Johnson called Social Security a “Ponzi Scheme” and suggested raising the retirement age.
