Statement from Wisconsin Public Education Network Executive Director Heather DuBois Bourenane and Wisconsin Alliance for Excellent School President Sandy Whisler on DPI refusal to comply with federal “compliance request” that would force them to violate existing law:

“We applaud Superintendent Underly and district leaders statewide for affirming their commitment to comply with state and federal laws which protect the rights of all students in our public schools to learn and thrive in safe, welcoming, diverse, inclusive, and equitable environments. Education is a state responsibility. Existing law expressly prohibits federal control of education. Neither the Secretary of Education, nor the President can unilaterally change the law and regulations. The health, safety, and future of our children cannot be compromised by the whims of those who do not understand or respect the needs of our children or the scope of existing law.”
