MADISON, Wis. – Senate Democratic Leader Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton) released the following statement regarding President Trump’s Tariff Announcement:
“As Wisconsin families and businesses work to keep their heads above water in a tough economy, the last thing we need is another round of reckless tariffs that will drive up costs and hurt our farmers, manufacturers, and working families. Instead of short-sighted trade wars, we should be working on smart, targeted policies that protect Wisconsin jobs.
“The Trump Tariffs may be sold as a way to protect American jobs, but in reality they will cost the average family over $3,500 per year and make it harder for Wisconsin businesses to compete. As former Vice President Mike Pence said yesterday: ‘The Trump Tariff Tax is the largest peacetime tax hike in American history.’
“Wisconsin voters showed on Tuesday that they are sick of the chaos coming out of Washington. During this time of extraordinary economic instability, the silence of my Republican colleagues on this important issue speaks volumes. If they support this damaging economic policy that has a devastating financial impact on Wisconsin families, then they need to explain to their constituents why. I don’t think they can. I urge the Trump administration to rescind these tariffs and I call on my Republican colleagues to do the same.”
