MADISON – Today, Wisconsin State Representative Alex Joers (D-Waunakee) voted against Assembly Bill 24—an anti-immigration bill put forward by Legislative Republicans. Rep. Joers released the following statement:
“This bill would require local law enforcement officers to either aid in Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agents’ mass deportation efforts, or sacrifice 15% of their county’s shared revenue funding. This bill was put forward by Republican Legislators to make Wisconsin appear to be in alignment with President Trump’s extreme and inhumane stances on immigration and citizenship.
“Our local law enforcement agencies are meant to protect our communities and promote public safety; this bill does nothing to help local law enforcement achieve either of those goals. Instead, AB 24 would waste Wisconsin’s local, state resources to enforce federal policy initiatives that are being challenged in court.
“Policies like AB 24 destabilize our communities and the families that reside in them. I refuse to support legislation that threatens law enforcement officers into complying with policy that harms our friends, neighbors, and communities. This bill is bad policy intended to further President Trump’s radical and cruel immigration stances.”
