MADISON- Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed yet another bill that strips local control from law enforcement while threatening to withhold funding from counties.
In response, Rep. Hysell (D- Sun Prairie) released the following statement:
“Wisconsin Sheriff’s Departments are tasked with protecting our communities. They need our support but instead are being bossed around by state leaders and threatened with funding cuts if they do not comply. Assembly Republicans today passed a party-line bill that would seize control from law enforcement and force them to follow the whims of an unconstitutional, unchecked Trump administration far off in Washington, D.C. Nothing in this bill makes anyone safer, but instead ties our local police to chaotic and illegal schemes coming down from Washington.
“Across the country, the Trump administration is openly and egregiously acting outside the law and the Constitution by detaining legal U.S. residents- including veterans. Why Assembly Republicans think yoking our local law enforcement officials to these federal directives is a top policy priority makes little sense.
“If we’re serious about public safety, we should not be threatening to withhold vital funds for a political stunt. I hope that my Republican colleagues join Assembly Democrats in making Wisconsin a strong line of defense against the Trump administration, rather than blindly passing complicit bills that enable him and burden our local law enforcement.”
