Massive property tax increases will result from Evers’ 400-year veto.
MADISON… The Wisconsin Supreme Court announced its ruling today, upholding Governor Tony Evers’ “400-year Veto.” Assembly Majority Leader Tyler August (R-Walworth) released the following statement following the court’s ruling:
“Yet again we see the liberal majority on the Supreme Court legislating from the bench to the peril of all Wisconsin property taxpayers.
Last budget cycle, Republicans gave a generous increase in education funding to our public schools over the two-year biennium. Despite a $1 billion increase in new funding, Governor Evers abused his veto pen to completely change legislative intent of the budget bill, resulting in a massive increase to property taxes over the next 400 years.
Today the Supreme Court upheld that veto, dealing a blow not only to taxpayers, but also to the entire check and balance system of 3 equal branches of government within Wisconsin.
It should alarm the public that Democrats have resorted to undermining the entire framework of government that our founding fathers have set up. If Democrats wanted to increase property taxes on hardworking families for the next 400 years, they should have run on that concept and earned majorities in the legislature. Democrats have failed to win on their ideas, even with their new gerrymandered maps courtesy of the same activist court.
Republicans will continue to fight for the taxpayers of our state, despite the abhorrent actions of the court, which have eroded our entire system of governing.”
