MADISON — State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly today released the following statement regarding the federal government’s decision to eliminate AmeriCorps programming and staff, a move that will significantly impact Wisconsin’s students, educators, schools, and communities.

“The decision to dismantle AmeriCorps is reckless and will have serious and lasting consequences for education in Wisconsin. At a time when we are urgently working to improve early literacy and close opportunity gaps, AmeriCorps has been a vital partner – delivering critical tutoring and literacy support that have helped countless young learners succeed. Just as importantly, AmeriCorps has helped grow out-of-school programs that provide students with safe, supportive, and engaging environments beyond the school day. Through initiatives like Farm to School, AmeriCorps has strengthened local economies, improved student nutrition and promoted healthier schools by connecting Wisconsin farmers to school cafeterias. Not only do these programs support current students, but they also inspire many graduates to become AmeriCorps members, continuing their commitment to national service and volunteering across the country.

“AmeriCorps doesn’t just support learning in Wisconsin; it strengthens our communities. Eliminating these programs and staff destroys years of progress and threatens our collective goal of providing a high-quality education for every Wisconsin child.”

A list of Wisconsin schools participating in the Reading Corps, Math Corps and Early Learning Corps programs can be found on this website. A summary video of Farm to School’s impact on Wisconsin can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s YouTube channel. Information on the program can also be found on the DPI’s website. Additionally, the DPI has developed a webpage showing the impact of federal funding across Wisconsin – including schools and libraries. Resources on this page include interactive maps and downloadable one-page handouts. An official photo of Dr. Underly is also available on the DPI’s website.
