Going into the 2012 debate, Ryan at age 42 looked to me like the future of Republican politics. … But the bombast and ridicule Biden inflicted on Ryan in the 2012 debate was a foretaste of the bombast and ridicule former President Donald Trump inflicted on multiple rivals in presidential primary debates in 2016 — and which he inflicted on the (to many voters) surprisingly inert Biden last week.
Nearly 13 years before the Supreme Court conferred absolute immunity on official presidential acts and set off hysterically apocalyptic predictions from the political left, President Obama did the very thing that they have convinced themselves that Trump will now be allowed to do.
The court took up the case now because it is five months from the election. Holding the hearings and filing the briefs will help fills some news cycles about this issue leading up until the election. It will keep it top of mind and keep people from thinking about inflation, illegal immigration, high taxes, corruption, and all of the other issues that more directly impact their everyday lives.
Divisions continued to plague court calendar.
The absence today of political interest in controlling health costs in Wisconsin, given our antitrust history, is puzzling. Neither Democrat Gov. Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul, nor GOP legislative leaders, have taken up the cause for consumers.
In the last few years, Congress has taken steps to bring down medication prices, including by allowing Medicare to negotiate prices of certain drugs. But to truly bring down costs for all Americans, Congress must now look to PBMs and address the conflicts of interest that exist in their business model, or costs will never be contained.
We stand at a time in our nation’s history where there is great division and consternation about our direction as a nation moving forward. The time to honor the birth of this great nation should be a time when we set aside our differences and seek to foster a greater understanding.
