WASHINGTON, D.C.– Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) today applauded the bipartisan momentum to ban TikTok unless it is divested after Senator Angus King (I-ME) joined Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) in reintroducing the Averting the National Threat of Internet Surveillance, Oppressive Censorship and Influence, and Algorithmic Learning by the Chinese Communist Party Act (ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act). This bill would protect Americans by blocking and prohibiting all transactions from TikTok and any other social media company in, or under the influence of, China, Russia, and several other foreign countries of concern.
In a statement, Gallagher said, “I’m glad the Senate companion to my ANTI-SOCIAL CCP Act is now bipartisan. The dam is breaking on TikTok and other apps like it, and I hope to build on this momentum in the coming weeks and expand bipartisan support for this bill in the House too.”
Last year, Gallagher and Rubio made the case for banning TikTok unless it is divested in a Washington Post op-ed and proceeded to introduce bipartisan legislation with Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi that would do so. In the months since, the app has been banned from state government devices in 30 states and has also been blocked on most federal devices.
