(MADISON)— Recently, there were two fatal pedestrian versus car crashes on Milwaukee’s south side. Sen Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement.
“There have been more than a dozen traffic deaths in Milwaukee this year. The two latest were of seniors, and both accidents occurred on busy streets in my district.
“I offer my sincere condolences to the families of the victims. One traffic death is too many, and we all share a responsibility to drive safely. I call on everyone to drive sober, at a reasonable speed, and without distractions, because residents of the city deserve to be safe while they use our public streets. A just society demands freedom of movement, but unless we can be confident in our ability to safely cross the street, we don’t fully get this freedom. It’s up to all of us to make our community safer and more just by driving responsibly.
“Policymakers must play a role as well. I am encouraged by Governor Evers’ budget proposals to increase shared revenue, provide access to driver’s licenses and driver’s education, and provide grants for traffic calming measures. I ask my colleagues in the legislature to join the efforts to make streets safer.”
