MADISON, WI – Today, SEIU WI Executive Director, Louis Davis, issued the following statement in opposition to the outrageous calls for the impeachment of Justice Janet Protasiewicz, just after she was elected by a commanding majority to a ten-year term:

“SEIU WI members from across the state are united in opposition to any effort to overturn the will of the voters who elected Janet Protasiewicz as Wisconsin’s Supreme Court Justice for the next ten years.

“Elections are an expression of the will of the people where all adult citizens regardless of race, income, occupation, location, or any other factor each have an equal voice. The voters, led by working class people of all races and backgrounds, spoke very clearly as they turned out in record numbers to elect Justice Janet by a margin of 200,000 votes.

“Justice Janet was upfront with who she was and the voters had every opportunity to consider other options based on their qualifications and visions but clearly chose her.

“Unfortunately, just as anti-democracy forces moved to overturn the election of President Biden, in 2021, culminating in their assault on our nation’s Capital, today they are willing to reverse the voices of the voters by pursuing this frivolous effort. We call on Speaker Robin Vos to halt this immediately and apologize to the voters of Wisconsin for his outrageous comments about impeachment he has made so far.”

SEIU Wisconsin is a newly merged SEIU local representing 7,000 healthcare, long term care, property service and public sector workers across the state and nearly 2 million nationally. SEIU works in coalition with other labor and community allies to defend democracy and ensure workers have a meaningful voice in the political process. In 2023 our union endorsed Justice Protasiewicz because of her demonstrated record in supporting working Wisconsinites. However, SEIU Wisconsin only has permanent issues, and no permanent endorsements, and it is committed to full democratic participation of all citizens.
