Madison – Citing historic tax cuts and slimming state government, State Representative Chuck Wichgers (R-Muskego) voted in favor of the two year state budget Thursday.
“This budget brings much needed tax relief to middle class Wisconsinites. In fact, 75% of tax cuts go to the middle class: joint married filers making $18,000-$400,000 will now be in one 4.40% bracket. This tax cut comes while the state also funds the critical services of government – public safety, infrastructure, and education,” stated Wichgers.
The plan crafted by the Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) cuts taxes by an historic $4.4 billion dollars. Income taxes are cut by $3.5 billion dollars, averaging $537per taxpayer per year. Combining two brackets into one, the tax plan simplifies and streamlines Wisconsin’s tax code. While there is still room to grow income tax relief in Wisconsin, the budget also froze property taxes and eliminates the personal property tax, paid by businesses.
“Besides historic tax cuts, this budget cuts bureaucracy, but also addresses the burden of inflation by massively investing in state correctional employees,” said Wichgers. “Correctional security positions, including the Milwaukee House of Corrections in Franklin, will see a share of $344 million to raise base pay.”
Wichgers applauded JFC for redirecting UW System funds from positions that are ideological and divisive to workforce readiness.
Representative Wichgers conducted five district listening sessions in spring of this year and sent out budget surveys to all constituents in the 82nd Assembly District. The budget passed the Senate Wednesday and will next head to Governor Evers’ desk.
