MADISON, WI – State Rep. Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) issued the following statement today upon introduction of legislation to repeal an 1849 abortion law and restore the law that was in effect under the Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision:

“I believe that every Wisconsinite should have the right to consult their family, their faith, and their doctor to decide what is best in their very unique circumstance.”

“The abortion law that is on the books was passed in 1849, just one year after statehood and long before women gained the right to vote. This was long before there were advances in medical science that can identify serious health problems during pregnancy. The existing law subjects any doctor performing an abortion to felony charges, including prison time.”

“Reputable polls show that Wisconsinites overwhelmingly support safe, legal access to abortion. Nobody wants to face this decision, but there are dire circumstances that warrant a woman consulting with her trusted health care providers.”

“Two months ago Republicans blocked a Democratic proposal that would have allowed voters statewide to say whether the archaic law should be repealed. The Republicans didn’t want to hear from the voters. It is my hope the majority party will allow a vote on the Restore Roe Act.”
