MADISON, WI – State Representative Supreme Moore Omokunde and State Representative Samba Baldeh oppose the use of firearms by Senegal’s State Security Forces against citizen demonstrators. Earlier this month, at least 16 people were killed and over 350 were injured by state security forces in protests in Senegal. In addition to the state violence, the Senegalese government has also put restrictions on the freedom of information: restricting internet access and taking a private TV channel off of the air after they covered the demonstrations live.

“We call on Senegal’s President, Macky Sall, to condemn those members of the state security force that fired upon peaceful demonstrators. We ask President Sall to respect the constitution of Senegal and to not run for a third term in 2024. Finally, we also ask President Sall to remove Internet access restrictions on the Senegalese people and to restore Walfadjiri TV to the airwaves. We firmly believe that we must never silence our youth and we must never silence the people’s will for a better future.”
