Madison, Wis. – Earlier today, Governor Tony Evers signed into law Assembly Bills 264, 265, 266, 267, & 268. This sweeping workforce housing package includes provisions to revitalize our main streets, rehabilitate current residential housing properties, and convert unutilized commercial spaces into Housing. On the signing of these bills, Representative Kalan Haywood (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement:
“As the Ranking Member on the Assembly Committee on Housing & Real Estate, I was proud to support this bipartisan effort through our committee & I am proud to see our work become law today. These bills allow the Wisconsin Housing & Economic Development Authority to provide loans that will revitalize our housing stock & bring more housing to more people. If the Joint Committee on Finance adequately funds these programs, we will be able to see real change in Wisconsin’s housing market”
“The current state of Wisconsin’s housing market is clear, we do not have enough affordable housing to meet the demands of our growing state. Legislation like this will help spur growth in our housing stock, so that more families are able to call Wisconsin home. In addition, these bills focus on revitalizing Main Street housing & rehabilitating commercial spaces to become workforce housing. These measures will connect workers with employers, and allow our economy to continue on a path of sustainable growth.”
“I often say, housing connects to everything. Where you live impacts where you can work, where you can find education, and where you access healthcare. It is absolutely vital that we make affordable housing available to Wisconsin families, so that Wisconsin families can continue to live, work, and enjoy our great state.”
