MADISON –Yesterday, Cardinal Stritch University president, Dan Scholz, announced that the school based in Milwaukee will be closing May 22nd. The announcement was made in a video posted on the school’s YouTube page. Cardinal Stritch is a private Catholic university founded in 1937 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. Scholz cited declining enrollment trends, fiscal challenges, the need for more resources, and mounting operation and facility challenges as the reason for the closure.
Representative Jodi Emerson (D-Eau Claire) who serves as ranking member on the Assembly Colleges and Universities committee issued the following statement in response:
“I am saddened to hear of the closing of Cardinal Stritch University. My thoughts are with the students who are finding out late in the academic year that they must continue their education at another school.
“I support Governor Evers’ proposal for increased funding in public higher education in the 2023-24 budget that will help colleges address rising costs, make tuition more affordable for low-income students and expand financial aid. It is critical as a state that we invest in our public higher education systems or we will see more institutions faced with the difficult decision to close their doors. “
