[Madison, WI] – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed legislation aimed at promoting school safety and increasing transparency. State Representative Calvin Callahan (R-Tomahawk) supported this legislation as it came before the legislative body.

“One of the most important jobs we have is to do everything we can to ensure the safety of the students in our state,” said Rep. Callahan. “The bills I voted in favor of today will help to provide parents, school districts, and the state with the information needed to develop and implement effective strategies moving forward. Every student in our schools should be provided a safe, comfortable environment that he or she can learn in.”

Assembly Bill 53 requires high schools to collect statistics on several crimes including homicides, sexual assault, burglary, and battery. These statistics must then be reported to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for its annual report cards. Assembly Bill 69 requires the hiring of a school resource officer by the school if there have been at least 100 incidents and 25 arrests.

The proposals now head to the State Senate for their consideration.
