MADISON… Assembly Majority Leader Tyler August (R-Lake Geneva) released the following statement regarding Governor Tony Evers’ vetoes of the Republican biennial state budget bill:
“I am extremely disappointed that Governor Evers not only broke our deal on school funding, but also stuck the hardworking taxpayers of Wisconsin with a massive tax increase. Evers’ line-item veto is in stark opposition to the Republicans’ historic tax cut, which would have been the largest in state history.
On top of vetoing our Middle Class Tax Cut, Governor Evers also broke his word with an irresponsible veto that would blow the roof off of property taxes. In fact, the veto would allow property taxes to skyrocket over the next 400 years. Taxpayers need to remember this when getting their tax bills this December.
Facing a budget surplus, the difference couldn’t be any clearer: Republicans voted send $4.4 billion back to taxpayers, while Democrats want to keep it in Madison to fuel unnecessary government expansion.
Finally, it was disappointing that Evers chose to veto Republicans’ efforts to combat the woke agenda at the University of Wisconsin. Our colleges must focus on educating tomorrow’s workforce, not dividing and shaming our children.
After months of good faith negotiations on major budget items, it is unacceptable that he went back on his word and broke our agreement. It will be difficult, if not impossible, to ever negotiate with this governor again in the future.”
