Wisconsin—May 3, 2023—Governor Evers’ budget included historic investments in the health of Wisconsin’s residents and democracy. Yesterday, Republican members of the JFC eliminated proposals that would improve health outcomes for Wisconsinites like:
- Affordable health care
- Rejecting a cap on insulin copays at $35
- Rejecting an expansion of health care access for 90,000 Wisconsinites
- Paid family and medical leave
- Refusing to provide most private-sector workers 12 weeks of paid leave
- Refusing to expand paid leave eligibility
- Access to safe, clean water
- Rejecting a $300 million investment in lead pipe replacement
- Rejecting a $100 million investment to address PFAS contamination
- Measures to improve health equity statewide
Statement from Steven Webb, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin
“Budgets are documents that reflect our values. The budget that Governor Evers proposed was an investment in the health and growth of all Wisconsinites. It invested in expanding access to health care and funded initiatives to address disparities in health care, like capping insulin copays at $35. Additionally, the governor’s budget made significant investments in access to clean water. All the proposed budget’s investments in health and health equity have been ignored. Our elected leaders have a responsibility to the health of our state and of our people. The Joint Committee on Finance and the state legislature can still do the right thing for all Wisconsinites.”
