WISCONSIN—MARCH 31–Statement from Tanya Atkinson, President of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI), on the Anniversary of Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban:
“On the 174th anniversary of the passing of Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban, we are reminded the progress that was made was stripped from us after the fall of Roe v. Wade last year. With the law unclear, doctors and patients in Wisconsin are no longer in control of this personal, private, and life-saving healthcare.
“However, we know the people of Wisconsin believe everyone should have the freedom to control their bodies and lives. We are more determined than ever to continue the fight advocating for the restoration of reproductive freedom and are grateful for the leadership of Attorney General Josh Kaul and the lawsuit to restore abortion care. We look forward to even more progress in ensuring that there is access to the full spectrum of reproductive health care for all those who need it, when they need it.
“Deciding if or when to become a parent is one of the most personal, life-changing decisions a person can make. It is time to take personal medical decisions out of the hands of politicians, and back into our doctor’s office. It is time to move away from abortion bans and toward programs that improve health equity, address health disparities, and improve health outcomes.
“Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin health center doors remain open, and we won’t stop until everyone has access to the sexual and reproductive healthcare they need to control their bodies, lives, and futures.”
