This week, vulnerable Republican Derrick Van Orden joined extreme MAGA Republicans and voted to enact disastrous cuts to services that veterans in Wisconsin depend on. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, their plan would cut nearly 81,000 health service jobs within the VA, cause 30 million fewer veteran outpatient visits, and potentially lead to a dramatic increase of disability claims backlogs.
This extreme bill would also severely cut essential services for struggling veterans, including housing support, food assistance, mental health and substance abuse services, and job training programs.
More than 20 veterans groups have already denounced this Van Orden-backed legislation, saying:
“Our country must keep our promises and provide them with the best healthcare and benefits possible. The Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023 does not spell out the necessary protections and puts these benefits at risk.”
Economists recently warned that Republicans’ plan would increase unemployment, decrease economic growth, increase the likelihood of a recession.
DCCC Spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“Derrick Van Orden’s spineless support of a bill that would gut health care for America’s veterans is unacceptable and it sends a clear message to voters. Van Orden would rather put the 44,000 veterans in WI-03 on the chopping block in order to advance an extreme MAGA agenda, instead of protecting those who serve and defend our nation.”
