Hi folks! Welcome back to Tammy Tuesdays, our weekly update email on Tammy’s work and the big fights she’s taking on for Wisconsin families.
Tammy knows that there’s more that unites us than divides us. She understands that Wisconsin’s working families all want good-paying jobs, affordable healthcare, and the same freedoms their parents and grandparents had.
Read below for highlights of what Tammy worked on this week:
Supporting Wisconsin’s Dairy Industry
Everyone knows that Wisconsin produces the best dairy products in the world. Tammy is proud of this fact, and will always work hard to support Wisconsin’s dairy industry. In the 2018 Farm Bill, Tammy helped pass the Dairy Business Innovation Act (DBIA), which has given grants to dozens of Wisconsin’s dairy businesses to help them diversify their businesses, expand dairy production, and create jobs.
Last weekend, Tammy visited one of these dairy businesses that received a DBIA grant. A farm in Columbus, Wisconsin, owned by seventh generation dairy farmers, were able to utilize their DBIA grant to open a creamery that makes and sells artisan butter – the first of its kind in the state. Right now, Tammy is working across the aisle to pass even more DBIA funding in the 2023 Farm BIll so our small and medium-sized dairy businesses in Wisconsin and across the country can flourish. The past, present, and future of Wisconsin includes our dairy industries, and Tammy is always going to work hard to keep it that way.
Protecting Wisconsin’s Small Businesses
Wisconsin is the small business powerhouse of the Midwest and Tammy is proud of this fact. Our small businesses make our communities more vibrant and keep our Made in Wisconsin economy going strong. That’s why Tammy is always going to do right by our small businesses.
Last week, Tammy was proud to work across the aisle to introduce the American IP Defense and Enforcement Advancement (IDEA) Act. This bipartisan legislation will crack down on foreign actors who try to steal intellectual property (IP) from American businesses and help law enforcement respond to foreign IP theft. This means that Wisconsin’s small businesses will have the tools necessary to protect themselves and their ideas, all while supporting our American economy.
Investing in Public Safety
Tammy knows that safety is a top priority for Wisconsin’s working families. She also knows that if we want to keep our communities safe, we have to invest in public safety. That means making sure our first responders have all the tools and resources they need to do their jobs successfully.
In a recent visit to the Prairie du Chien police and fire departments, Tammy was proud to announce that she secured $5 million dollars to build a “Public Safety Center” for the community. Currently in separate buildings about a mile away from each other, the police and fire departments, along with local EMS, are now going to be under one roof in this Public Safety Center. This is a huge public safety investment for the Prairie du Chien community, along with the Crawford County, Clayton County, and Iowa County communities who these first responders also serve. Public safety is always going to be a top priority for Tammy, and she’s going to keep working hard to ensure our first responders have the critical resources to keep our communities safe.
Fighting for Affordable Housing
Tammy knows that our country is experiencing a housing shortage, which is causing prices to skyrocket and making home ownership hard to achieve for our working families. Meanwhile, big investors are buying up housing to get unfair tax deductions and make a profit at the expense of working Americans.
Tammy wants to end this corrupt practice and is introducing legislation that eliminates these unfair tax breaks for the big corporate investors. Because it’s unfair that while these big investors on Wall Street keep getting richer, hard working Wisconsin families are struggling to keep a roof over their head. Tammy isn’t afraid to take on anyone if that means doing right by Wisconsin families and she’s going to keep working hard to find solutions to solve the housing crisis.
Standing Up for Our Freedoms
When Roe v. Wade was overturned just over a year ago, our country was sent fifty years back in time. In Wisconsin, we were sent 173 years back, a time that predates the Civil War, decades before women had the right to vote.
From leading the charge to codify the right to choose into federal law through her Women’s Health Protection Act to supporting legislation that will ensure Wisconsinites can get the health care they need as soon as they need it, Tammy is proud to stand side by side with Wisconsinites in the fight to take back our freedoms. Right now, she is working to pass the Convenient Contraception Act, which would stop private insurance companies from limiting birth control prescriptions to three months and require the option to offer one year’s worth of birth control in one prescription. This legislation expands access to contraception, which is critical in states like Wisconsin that are operating under archaic abortion bans.
