WSAW: Barnes Not Slowing Down

This week, Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes, candidate for U.S. Senate, took the fight to Sen. Ron Johnson, launching his first ad holding Sen. Johnson accountable for his record of outsourcing jobs. He also slammed Sen. Johnson for refusing to stand up for Wisconsin workers in Oshkosh and for threatening to strip Social Security and Medicare of annual funding.

    • Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, a Democrat running for U.S. Senate, was endorsed by the United Auto Workers Wisconsin during a visit to Oshkosh Wednesday.

    • At a news conference, the union called out incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson, saying he didn’t do enough to keep jobs in Wisconsin when the U.S. Postal Service was contracting Oshkosh Corporation to build new mail trucks.

    • “People like Ron Johnson, who had all of the influence with large corporations and corporate execs, he had an opportunity to at least stand up and fight, and he refused to. So, no,” Barnes answered.

    • Andrew Stark of the UAW Wisconsin State Community Action Program noted Barnes is the son of a UAW worker and wrote, “While Ron Johnson was all too happy to ship 1,000 good-paying UAW jobs out of the state, Mandela Barnes has never failed to show up and fight for workers. UAW Wisconsin State CAP knows we can trust Mandela to go to the mat for us in Washington.”

    • TRANSCRIPT: “Big endorsement in the race for U.S. Senate in Wisconsin this afternoon. The United Auto Workers Union in Oshkosh formally endorsed Democrat Mandela Barnes. They’re making the loss of 1,000 Oshkosh Defense jobs a key issue here. Union leaders are still angry with Republican Senator Ron Johnson for not intervening and stopping Oshkosh from taking those jobs down South.

    • Barnes is the son of a UAW member and has spent his career defending Wisconsin union members. “It’s so important because this is another community that Ron Johnson has left behind. It’s another group of people that Ron Johnson has taken for granted,” explained Barnes.

    • “I wouldn’t be here today if it were not for the guarantees in the union contracts that my parents had. I want every child in the state of Wisconsin to have at least the same opportunities that I had,” explained Barnes.

    • “[Ron Johnson]’s a self-serving, out of touch, ultra-millionaire politician who cares about himself more than the rest of the people in Wisconsin […] It’s exactly why I decided to run for the U.S. Senate, to kick him out of office because people are going to continue to be left behind as long as he’s in office.” Barnes said.

Mandela Barnes Continues Campaign Trail Across the State

Mandela also continued to visit with Wisconsinites across the state, including meeting with Milwaukee union workers during a shift change. He spent time discussing the concerns that Wisconsinites face, defending voters from Sen. Johnson’s continued attacks, and building his expansive coalition.
